JYO & Irish National Opera – Open Foyer Series

In early 2024, Julianstown Youth Orchestra were contacted by Irish National Opera to collaborate as part of their open foyer series. INO seeks groups local to their performing venues who can produce an interesting creative response to the upcoming touring opera. JYO were thrilled at the opportunity to work with INO.

James Bingham from INO’s outreach team worked closely with JYO to support the creative process. The concept of a specially tailored arrangement of the opening sinfonia of Vivaldi’s L’Olympiade, arranged by Àine Delaney (INO), was agreed upon and a film of the JYO performance would be screened at the opening night of L’Olympiade at the Solistice Theatre Navan. The orchestra learned and rehearsed the piece with conductor Lorcan Daly over several weeks. The performance of the sinfonia was filmed by Gansee Film, at Coláiste na hInse and the screening of the performance was presented in the foyer of the Solstice Theatre Navan on May 2 2024. Players from JYO received a free ticket to the evening’s performance thanks to INO.

Open Foyer allowed Julianstown Youth Orchestra to bring the creative medium of opera to the players. The project gave players an opportunity to explore the world of opera through the lens of their local youth orchestra. For many it was their first time to the opera and they felt they were interwoven into the production.
